Multiplicity – Learning the Joys of Living as a ‘Multi-individual’

We need to understand and accept our peculiarities and versatility as humans – our multiplicity – and embrace all of the magical parts of it. It makes for a much richer living experience.

If there’s one thing this blog focuses on, it’s genuinely and wholly living life for all the different sides there are to us. And even that in itself is not one thing. #ThinkAbourrit

Surely, by now we must know that, at the very least, each and every one of us is multiple things. You can contextualise this around a host of subjects including hobbies, skills, careers, talents, relationships, and even personality. So, enjoy the possibilities.

Now, whether or not you show up as all of these things at one point in your life, throughout, or at all is another matter which will not escape our coverage as we go along.

While our core perspective as a blog centres on examining and appreciating multiplicity as it applies to us humans, for right now, this piece is all about identifying the category of us that we will refer to as the ‘Multis’. Those of us with more sides to ourselves than we know what to do with.

I recently discovered other words and phrases to describe us (many thanks, TikTok) that were so apt, I practically cr-aughed!

Rediscovery…

You know when you’ve always known something, maybe even coined a word for it, but couldn’t quite articulate it outside of your thoughts because you weren’t sure it was or could be a thing, and then someone else goes, “Err… Duh. Of course, it’s a thing”, and you can relate so aggressively it feels deliciously good? Yeah. Precisely.

The discovery that there are in fact more of us multis that understand it in this way re-inspired me to pick my blogging back up. It made me so eager to talk about this subject matter for those who may still have questions, using my own experiences as I navigate life and the world vehemently refusing to be even two things. It’s a beautiful struggle with profound gratification.

This decision to explore this subject matter isn’t a recent development for me. In 2019, I started to write a sort of documentary to capture my professional journey and observations in a piece titled A Year in the Life of a Multi-Talented Individual. You can now read it in all its updated glory.

It was a working title for reasons I already touched on above, but it was the guide I needed to get going. And guess what? I found that exact phrase is an actual thing now! So, I retained it in the new title.

Article edit history

The idea was to have that lengthy piece with all of the extensive accounts of my experiences in the style of a journal of sorts and then this one as a summary to accompany it. It focused on my professional life because trying to define myself professionally was a pain point for me at the time. Alas, I got stuck because so much happened and nothing happened (waddup COVID-19?) that I didn’t even know when one whole year passed and another was counting. I realised I had even stopped documenting the content for it at some point.

But, evolution rocks!

I didn’t retain the initial title – because of busted timelines – but I kept the phrase in the new one A Glimpse into the Life of a Multi-Talented Individual. I did this because I retained the initial direction of the article which is a highlight of the life of a multi-talented professional. It has an expanded timeline, anecdotes, and more.

Read it!

Going forward, we will continue to explore the notion of multiplicity and multi-passionate individuals, which I think is still primarily used in career-oriented contexts but I use to approach living holistically. #IssaSeries, so be sure to continue to check back in for them. I’ll also let you know, of course.

And thus, my people, I am re-invigorated in the knowledge that the concept of this blog, Thiaplicity came to me for a reason. I will continue to figure out, mould, and reinvent its raison d’etre as necessary with all the passion I can muster so we can all enjoy our lives as joyfully and peacefully as possible, please. That’s actually the point, anyway.

By the way, the quote at the very beginning is obviously mine.

Signing off with the question – Don’t you just love being a Multi?

I have a deep admiration and appreciation for the versatility and creativity that life presents, and humans represent... For multiplicity. It’s in the way we live our lives, the way we affect others through the stories we tell, the arts we express, the values we uphold, the truths we seek, the innovations we inspire, the changes we champion, and the choices we make.
