So, if anyone can explain this heat to me over some cold drinks, I would be quite grateful. What is up with it? Seriously. Is it because December is coming? Before it gets kinda chilly (albeit dry and dusty), we must suffer this heat? Will it let up soon? And can there just always be light, in the meantime?
*sigh*
More to the point? Who’s excited about next month? Because I absolutely am!
First, there’s the holidays! Beautiful, wonderful holiday season. Most offices shut down, and some have awesome parties before or after this. Then, there’s the all-around festivities and feeling of merriment – My mum’s DELICIOUS rice, your mum’s or dad’s or cook’s, making plans to stuff your face full with food and drink at different friends’, acquaintances’, and perhaps strangers’ homes, going to parties. All such wonderful plans. I love it!
Also, do people just generally feel and act nicer during the holidays?
Next, people leave the city. Arguably the best part about December. Well, at least for me. I can’t get over the euphoric feeling I always get when I step out of my apartment, and there are literally only two or four people in sight. Those days when I actually want to drive, because the roads are so free, I can almost cry for joy. The only time of the year I think, “Hey, living in Lagos is not so bad.”
I love Decembers. I swear, I’m not even going to lie. Even when things such as theoretically conspiratorial fuel scarcities occur, and all these business people decide it’s our small change they want to use to go and flex on their trips, I still love it.
Then, I love the change in weather, when it happens. I feel like we get just the right amount of harmattan in Lagos. Some of us get yet another chance to rock our thicker clothes, and it helps a lot of us remember to nurture our skin and guard our immune systems preciously.
Plus, I love the feeling of je ne sais quois that envelopes the air throughout that month and swooshes over into the new year. I love the unwritten promise that the following year brings new possibilities and opportunities for all, and I love laughing with my friends when people we know backslide on their ridiculous new year resolutions.
Another thing is, I particularly love taking trips in December any year I can. After eating all the rice I can lay my hands on, of course. I figure it’s my own little way of unwinding after a long and eventful year. Even if it usually means I start the new year broke. So what? I’ll only do it all over again if I can. Such fun!
I must admit I don’t necessarily use these December trips for deep reflections about what I want to achieve the next year, but they’re a good time for this as well. Also for letting our alter egos come out to play, and for increasing our exposure.
This year, I’m going somewhere which I would shortly share. I have to split these posts up, no? ‘Keep y’all coming back and such. But, I’m rather excited and have already begun to plan my activities out.
December is coming. Are you prepared? It’d be my pleasure to hear how you spend your end of the year. #HonestBlog
A good ‘I love Decembers’ song would be an awesome sign-off here. I think I’ll make one. Who wants to feature?
I’m really excited right now, although I ain’t taking no trip, but I know it’s going to be fun.
I know, right?? There’s just an excitement you feel in December. So infectious.
Great write up!!!
